Admission Requirements

Admission to the Bachelor’s programme in Psychology at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University is based on a single-round portfolio evaluation. Applicants do not take any entrance tests or interviews. The selection process is based entirely on the materials you submit with your application. The maximum total score is 100 points. All documents must be submitted electronically via the Faculty information system by the stated deadline.

Your application will be assessed in three areas:

This part evaluates your academic performance in secondary education.

Required document:

  • An officially issued or officially certified transcript of academic results from the final report of the penultimate year of secondary school
    • e.g. Year 3 of a four-year secondary school programme or Year 7 (septima) of an eight-year grammar school
  • The transcript must be:
    • in English, or
    • in the original language with an officially certified English translation

How points are calculated:

  • Points are awarded based on your overall grade point average (GPA) calculated from all subjects listed on the transcript
  • Grades are converted to the Czech five-grade scale (1 = excellent, 5 = insufficient)
  • If another grading system is used, it will be proportionally converted to the five-grade scale

Points are calculated using the following formula: Points = −19 × GPA + 59

Indicative examples:

  • GPA 1.0 → 40 points
  • GPA 2.0 → 21 points
  • GPA 3.0 → 2 points
  • GPA worse than 3.0 → 0 points

The motivation letter is a key component of the admission process. It must be written in English and should be no longer than 650 words.

The motivation letter should address:

  • Why you want to study psychology
  • Why you chose psychology at Charles University
  • How you have developed your academic and personal competencies so far
  • Your academic and professional goals

This part assesses your overall suitability and preparedness for studying Psychology beyond grades.

Required documents:

  • A structured CV in English
  • A list and documentation of relevant academic, professional, or extracurricular activities, such as:
    • participation in student research or academic projects
    • involvement in research studies
    • conferences, lectures, workshops, or courses
    • volunteering, internships, or work placements
    • leadership roles or long-term extracurricular activities
  • Optional supporting materials:
    • written assignments or essays on psychological topics
    • certificates or confirmations (in English or with an officially certified English translation)

After acceptance, you will be required to submit following documents to start your studies:

Previous Education

To be admitted, you must have completed secondary education concluded by a school-leaving examination (high-school diploma). You will be required to submit your high school diploma prior the start of the programme.

If you completed secondary education outside the Czech Republic, you must provide proof that your foreign diploma is recognised as equivalent to the Czech school-leaving qualification. This process is commonly referred to as nostrification.

You can fulfil this requirement in one of the following ways:

  1. Standard (state) nostrification
    • Valid nationwide and can be used for future studies or employment in the Czech Republic.
    • Recommended if you want permanent recognition of your diploma.
  2. Automatic recognition under international agreements
    • Applies to certain countries (e.g. Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia).
    • No additional nostrification is required.
  3. Recognition by the Faculty of Arts (simplified assessment)
    • Available only to applicants who have been admitted.
    • Conducted directly by the Faculty of Arts.
    • Valid only for admission to the Faculty of Arts, Charles University and only for the given academic year.
    • Subject to an administrative fee.

All documents must be submitted in original or officially certified copies. Documents not issued in English or Czech must be accompanied by an officially certified translation.

Applicants will receive detailed instructions via the Charles University information system after admission, including deadlines and submission method.

Official guidance on recognition of foreign diplomas

Applicants are strongly advised to start the recognition process as early as possible.

English Language Proficiency

As the programme is taught in English, all admitted applicants must demonstrate English proficiency at level B2 or higher. Proof of language proficiency is not submitted during the application stage; it is required only after admission, following instructions sent via the Charles University information system. Accepted proof includes a secondary school or university diploma from a programme taught in English, or an officially recognised English language certificate (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge exams). Documents must be submitted electronically, and certificates not issued in English must be accompanied by an officially certified English translation. Failure to submit valid proof by the specified deadline may result in the admission offer being withdrawn.

How to Apply

Deadline: 28 February

By 28 February, you must:

  • complete the online application in the Faculty information system, and
  • pay the application fee of 60 EUR (1,200 CZK).

The application fee is paid online by card through the system. Your application becomes valid only after the fee has been paid.

Deadline: 31 March

After submitting your application, you must upload the following documents no later than 31 March:

  • Secondary school transcript – from the penultimate year of your secondary education – in English or with an officially certified English translation
  • Motivation letter (in English, max. 650 words)
  • Structured CV (in English), including relevant academic, professional, or extracurricular activities

You may also upload supporting documents (certificates, confirmations, essays, etc.) if they are relevant to your interest in psychology.

All documents are submitted electronically via the Faculty information system.

March–15 April

All applications are reviewed by the Department of Psychology. Each application is evaluated in three areas:

Academic Preparedness (0–40 points)

Based on your grade average from the penultimate year of secondary school. Grades are converted to the Czech five-grade scale.

Motivation Letter (0–30 points)

Assesses how clearly and convincingly you explain:

  • why you want to study psychology,
  • why you chose the Faculty of Arts, Charles University,
  • how you have developed your academic and personal skills,
  • your academic and career goals.

CV and Relevant Activities (0–30 points)

Evaluates your preparedness beyond grades, such as:

  • participation in research or academic activities,
  • psychology-related courses, conferences, or projects,
  • volunteering, internships, leadership, or long-term extracurricular activities.

The maximum total score is 100 points. Applicants are ranked according to their score.

Admission depends on:

  • meeting all formal requirements, and
  • your ranking within the programme’s capacity.

There is no fixed minimum score guaranteeing admission.

Final admission decisions are issued by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and communicated through the Faculty information system.

Applicants who are offered admission must submit proof of English language proficiency at level B2 or higher.

  • Proof of language proficiency is not submitted during the application phase.
  • Admitted applicants will receive detailed instructions via the Faculty information system on how and by when to submit the required document.

Accepted proof includes:

  • a secondary school or university diploma from a programme taught in English, or
  • an officially recognised English language certificate (e.g. IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge exams).

Documents are submitted electronically. Certificates not issued in English must be accompanied by an officially certified English translation.

All admitted applicants must submit proof of completion of secondary education concluded by a school-leaving examination (high-school diploma).

For applicants who completed secondary education outside the Czech Republic:

You must also submit proof that your diploma is recognised as equivalent to the Czech qualification (nostrification). This can be done by:

  • submitting a state nostrification decision issued by a Czech regional authority, or
  • using automatic recognition (for diplomas from selected countries), or
  • requesting recognition by the Faculty of Arts (simplified assessment, valid only for FF UK and the given academic year).

Tuition Fees

Tuition Fee Amount

The tuition fee for the Bachelor’s programme in Psychology taught in English at the Faculty of Arts is 250,000 CZK (about 10 000 EUR) per academic year. This fee applies for each started academic year of study.

When the Fee Is Paid

The tuition fee is not paid during the admission process. It is charged after the start of your studies, once you are formally enrolled. The Faculty issues an official decision on the assessment of the fee, after which the payment becomes due.

Payment Options

The tuition fee may be paid in one full payment, or in instalments, according to Faculty rules and the payment schedule communicated to students. All payments are made by bank transfer to the University’s account.
